It’s not uncommon to hit a blank at the sudden change of direction; however, having a prepared list of questions demonstrates that you are serious about the position and have put some thought into how you could potentially fit into the role and the environment.

About the company

  1. Does the company have plans for growth or expansion?
  2. Does the company encourage further education?
  3. What characteristics do the achievers in this company seem to share?
  4. Is your company environmentally conscious? In what ways?  
  5. What is your staff turnover rate like?

About the position

  1. Please describe the duties of the job for me.
  2. What skills are especially important for someone in this position?
  3. Will I have the opportunity to work on special projects?
  4. What kinds of assignments might I expect the first six months on the job?
  5. Where does this position fit in the hierarchy of the company?
  6. What is the reporting line of this role?
  7. How do you feel about creativity and individuality?

About working hours and benefits

  • What are the company’s working hours?
  • Does this role or the company culture require overtime often?
  • Does this role require travel? And what type of travel and how often?
  • Does the organisation offer flexitime or remote work?
  • Does the company fill positions from the outside or promote from within first?
  • How often are performance reviews given?
  • Are salary adjustments geared to the cost of living or job performance?
  • What is the usual promotional time frame?
  • What benefits does the company offer?

Is the salary offered based on cost to company, gross salary or take home package?
