How Job Search Websites Can Help With Unemployment
By TalentOcean

South Africa has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world. The national unemployment rate is currently around 25% but in townships it is as high as 57%. If you have tried browsing a job search website lately, you would have noticed there are many online job opportunities and there are new online jobs advertised daily. If there are so many positions available you might be wondering why is unemployment so high? South Africa’s main problem is a skill shortage. South Africa has a matric pass rate of 67.8% but still have schools that have a pass rate of 0%.

According to the Bill of Rights in South Africa’s constitution, all South Africans have the right to basic education. Still many children never set foot in a classroom, while some private schools charge fifty thousand rand school fees a year. However, these high school fees give students in private schools a big advantage and they generally have internet access. We are in the information age so access to knowledge is important for one’s future. Most people who have internet access are probably already know how to search job websites to find online job opportunities. It really helps in one’s job search.

Job websites are such a valuable tool yet many people have never used them.  The number of South Africa’s internet users is estimated to be only around 5 million but that number is expected to rise as internet becomes more accessible and affordable. All school should teach computer skills including internet usage and how to search for employment on job websites. As the internet evolves the way in which we search for jobs is altered. In a few years who knows, we might not use newspapers to advertise jobs at all. All jobs will be advertised on career websites; we can already see this judging from the number of job advertisements on employment websites compared to newspapers. Job search websites have the potential to improve unemployment but we need to tap into that possibility.
